Small Boat Safety Program

The RSMAS Small Boat Safety Program works with faculty, staff, and students, who use small motorized or non-motorized boats as part of their field research, to provide the support needed to operate safely in their research environments. The RSMAS small boat fleet consists of 10 research vessels from 36' to 15' in length. All small boats are equipped with the necessary safety and operational equipment to conduct research in the local Florida waters.

All users of the RSMAS small boats must following the operational and safety guidelines of the Marine Operations Small Boat Safety Manual.

The staff of the Small Boat Safety Program also teach students (sometimes faculty & staff) the Department of Interior's Motorboat Operator Certification Course (or MOCC - see https://training.fws.gov/nctcweb/catalog/CourseDetail.aspx?CourseCodeLong=FWS-SAF4102 ). This course gives participants the training required to operate most small watercraft. It reviews minimum requirements for safe operation of motorboats and includes a review of legal requirements, preparations, navigation, operations, emergency procedures, rescue, self-rescue, trailering, fire suppression and basic seamanship. The course includes both classroom and on-the-water instruction.Classes are conducted many times during the academic year.
