Estelle Chaussard
I am a 26 years old french female. I did my undergrad between the Universities of Dijon and Montpellier, in France. I received a BS in Physics of Earth Sciences in 2006 and a MS in Geophysics in 2008, from the University of Montpellier II, France. I am familiar with the fields of volcanology, earthquakes physics, geodesy and numerical modeling.
I am currently working at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science of the University of Miami, FL, where I joined the Geodesy Lab in August 2008 to complete a PhD with Pr. Falk Amelung. In September 2011 I was awarded by the NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) to study the influence of tectonic stresses on the development of magma reservoirs in volcanic arcs.
My work focuses on using remote sensing to evaluate ground deformation associated with earthquakes, volcanoes and anthropologic activities. I am interested in the movement of the earth's surface and how to define the risks it implies. More precisely I am using InSAR data to detect and monitor precursory deformation at volcanic edifices, as well as to map and monitor land subsidence in Indonesia. I am passionated with what I do because I believe that geosciences do not only help understanding our planet, their applications can also help protect people’s lives.

The 2004 M9.2 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake prompted me, as an undergrad student, to incline to the field of geophysics because I realized there must be a lot of things to do to fully understand earthquakes and the solid Earth. My interests shifted to volcanoes later when I felt like we understood much of earthquakes, but the recent Haiti and Japan earthquakes proved my arrogance. My interest for earthquakes remains and pushed me to get involved in the Haiti GPS field campaign shortly after the earthquake, as well as in the relief effort; While my passion for volcanoes drove me to this PhD I am now finishing in Miami..
