Scientific Machine Shop
Purpose and Scope
-
The Rosenstiel School Scientific Machine Shop is a School-supported facility
whose primary function is to improve the quality of research at Rosenstiel School
and the Virginia Key oceanographic community. The goals of the shop are to
facilitate the development of new instrumentation and technology at
Rosenstiel School, to shorten the development time involved in bringing new ideas
into the field or laboratory, and ultimately to make our scientists more
competitive. The machine shop can and should be involved in research
programs from the proposal stage through the final field testing of new
equipment.
The shop provides:
- equipment design
- material selection
- fabrication/modification/repair of new and existing equipment
- time/cost estimation
- assistance in locating and interacting with outside
contractors for specialized work
Rates
-
Shop usage is billed on an hourly basis for labor, plus materials.
In most cases, consultation is provided at no charge. The shop is
subsidized by the School in order to keep the rates low. Our expectation
is that the usage of the shop will provide a significant return in terms
of better science and increased funding for our scientists. Check with
the machinist for current rates.
