IOF LogoSea Frontiers is the creation of the International Oceanographic Foundation, the inspiration of Dr. F.G. Walton Smith. Volume one appeared in 1954 and at the time was called Bulletin of the International Oceanographic Foundation. In 1957, with volume three, it became known as Sea Frontiers: Bulletin of the InternationalOceanographic Foundation. The companion publication, Sea Secrets, began then too with volume one. This contained questions about the seas sent in by members of the Organization and answered by knowledgeable experts from the Marine Laboratory, University of Miami as the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science was then known. In 1986, the publications united forming Sea Frontiers, Sea Secrets. The volume numbering followed that of Sea Frontiers, i.e. volume 32. This name lasted only about one year until 1988 when the publication became simply Sea Frontiers with volume 34. The question and answer portion continued within this magazine as one of the regular departments. Unfortunately, the last issue, volume 42, number 1, was printed in 1996.
