| Q&A 1. | What is a shellfish? |
| Biologically speaking, the term "shellfish" should be restricted to include the shell-bearing mollusks, examples of which are the clam, oyster, scallop, conch, snail and chambered nautilus. From a fisheries standpoint, the term is frequently used not only to include the edible mollusks, but also certain crustaceans, such as the shrimp, lobster, and crab. In addition to these widely-used definitions, "shellfish" is occasionally applied to certain members of the edible, bony-plated family of fishes known as the trunkfishes. |

| Q&A 2. | What does it cost in investment to enter the spiny lobster fishing business, and is it profitable? Chicago, Illinois |
| The fishery of spiny lobster is profitable to some fishermen, but the catch per fisherman-day apparently is declining due to the sharp increase in the number of men engaged in the fishery. It would be difficult to provide an accurate average figure for a lobsterman's yearly earnings. The investment is not too great. The materials to make the slat traps, which fishermen make themselves, cost about $10.00 each, and they may fish about 200 of these traps. They also have to replace lost or broken traps according to conditions. They use boats under 20 feet in length, which vary greatly in age, condition, and equipment, and therefore in value. |
