![]() Jim Reed started working in metal with a torch when he was sixteen. He hasn't stopped putting things together since then. Jim and his twin brother, John, were born in St. Louis, MO in March of 1943. His father's job kept his mom and their five sons moving around the country. He spent his teenage years in Fairfield, CT, and moved to Florida when he was 20. At 30 he moved to Oregon for nearly 10 years and returned to Miami in 1983. If you refer to him as an "artist" he will refute the title and will say that he does what he does because he has to - and he enjoys it. His work is the result of a fertile imagination and a drive to put items together. He thinks about each piece, putting it together in his mind, picking the medium, the container, and the various pieces that may come into the creation of a particular assemblage. Once he has the idea for something, he pursues it until he is satisfied. Much of his work is inspired by world events, travel, and trivia. Jim works in his shop in Key Largo on the weekends, surrounded by his art and his inventory of items to choose from. At present, his body of work exceeds 350 pieces and they will probably continue to grow - particularly when he has the time to devote all of his time to creating what he sees. *A sculptural work of art usually comprised of found objects. These works often re-frame everyday materials as fine art. |
