Engineering Support Facility

Purpose and Scope

The Engineering Support Facility's (ESF) mission is to provide oceanographic and atmospheric instrument design and development at system and component levels to the Rosenstiel School community. Its support covers the spectrum from the early stages of the proposal, instrument design, assembly, and system integration including actual field data collection and post processing.

The ESF concept pools resources from various scientific programs and applies them to the individual needs of individual researchers, with the benefits of time sharing of key equipment and human resources. It gives the Rosenstiel School scientist a competitive edge and engineering continuity that otherwise he can achieve only by creating his own electronics shop and hiring his own Electrical Engineer.

ESF also provides engineering management for specialized projects, computerized printed circuit board design and artwork, electronic equipment assembly and testing. Computer based instrumentation, data acquisition and processing utilizing personal or especially designed computers are supported.
