Vision

For the Rosenstiel School to sustain and enhance its prominence among the world's elite environmental research and educational institutions so that we can continue to discover and communicate knowledge:

Goal

Significantly improve the research, education and training experience by strengthening the basic science core and developing new combinations of disciplinary knowledge with the wider UM community, and external partners.

Objectives

1. Improve Graduate Education

   1. Provide additional UM budget based funding for stipends and tuition.

   2. Revise curriculum to better foster intellectual creativity and remove barriers to cross-campus course availability and advising of graduate students.

   3. Provide graduate students with instruction training through Teaching Assistant (TA) opportunities.

   4. Increase Ph.D. production by improving time to completion and increasing the number of Ph.D. students admitted by approximately 25%.

2. Improve Undergraduate Education

   1. Provide research experience opportunities for undergraduates through newly designed dedicated programs.

   2. Increase options for basic science, environmental policy and cross-disciplinary courses.

   3. Initiate innovative UM programs related to scientific literacy and environmental awareness.

3. Enhance UM-wide Research Capabilities

   1. Increase intellectual engagement with colleagues from other campuses by expanding existing RSMAS initiatives, offering incentives via UM interdisciplinary centers, and new course development.

   2. Leverage opportunities for sharing intellectual and UM assets by removing barriers to cross-campus advising and other administrative and budgetary restrictions.

   3. Strengthen and expand UM Office of Research.  Enhance research service and support culture.

4. Improve the Academic Culture

   1. Enhance collaborative opportunities that spans all UM campuses to foster inter-campus research and teaching

   2. Re-design business models that will enhance the ability to recruit and retain top scholars.

   3. Update facilities to increase competitiveness in research and better attract students and faculty.

5. Adopt Sustainable Business Plan

   Ensure faculty support model is sustainable and fosters the academic and research aspirations outlined above.

6. Accelerate Infrastructure Modernization

   1. Improve computational and visualization facilities and support.

   2. Begin construction of modern facilities needed ASAP.
