Web Page Template

There are 3 templates available to you. Two have the "look and feel" of the current Rosenstiel School pages and the third one is a very minimal, bare page. To download the minimal page right click here and save the HTML page in your computer. Continue reading if you want to use the other two templates. Be warned  that you will have to be more HTML savyy to use them.

This page describes a web page template you can download to generate pages with the “look and feel” of the current Rosenstiel School web site. Some knowledge of HTML is required to use them.

There are two templates available: a two column design or a three column design. The 2 column template can be used whenever you need more space for your content. The three column design is good for short web content.

After downloading the template, edit it to add your content and download it to your web area. You need to change the extension of the file to .shtml or make the file executable (Unix speak: chmod +x filename). This is necessary else the headers and footers will not display. The templates use server-side includes to generate the HTML for the header/footer. If we decide to update the content in the header or footer, your template will automatically pickup these changes. Note that you will not be able to run programs with the server-side include exec directive, it has been explicitly disabled for user pages.

You should right-click these links to save the templates on your local disk. The templates have a .txt extension, remove it before copying it to your web area.

Template Roadmap

Title:
The templates has a few items you can customize. First, is the title of the page. Look for <title> and change the string Your Title Goes Here to something more descriptive.

Breadcrumb Navigation:
If you wish to provide breadcrumb navigation after the line <!-- breadcrumb navigation --> insert a string with “»” separated tokens. For example, this is the HTML for the breadcrumb navigation found in the web page with the Dean’s welcome message:

<a href="http://www.rsmas.miami.edu">Home</a> &raquo;
<a href="http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/about-rsmas">About RSMAS</a> &raquo;
Dean's Welcome

Title Bar:
Locate the string <!-- title bar --> and change it to something more appropriate. If you do not provide a string you will see a thin green line in your web page below the breadcrumb navigation.

Left-hand Navigation:
If your site is more than one page long the left-hand area is used to provide links to your different pages. The HTML code is inserted below the line <!-- left hand navigation --> where the code an unordered list (<UL>) with an item (<LI>) for each page. Look at the source of any Rosenstiel School web page with left-hand navigation to see it in action.

Page Content:
Insert your page’s content below the line <!-- Your content goes here -->. The content is usually preceded by a header (<H1>) with a title.
