Various software is available. ; Click on the Microsoft Software link.  Note that other packages besides MS are available, some free, some for a charge. The various areas explain details.

Here we select packages available for computers purchased with an UM purchase order and used for official UM purposes. It is provided without charge. MS software is also provided without charge to Students. Faculty/Staff Personal computers gives terms for MS packages for your personal computers. We select the "University-Department" link for this example.

Click on "Microsoft Campus Agreement"

Information about usage restrictions and available packages are provided. Scroll to the bottom of the page to continue.

Click the ... Campus Agreement Software link to go to the authentication page.

Enter your UM CaneID/password and click [Login].

Select the package you wish to download. Here we are getting Office 2010. Different selections are available for Students and for-pay, but Office and Operating Systems are available for all.

Select the File Type from the drop-down menu. You want an Executable, a *.exe file that you run to install the package.

An Activation Key: will be displayed. Copy the key and hold it where you can enter it when you do the installation.

Download the file just like you would any Internet download. These are fairly large files, make sure you computer is not going to suspend during an hour or more of download time, depending on your connection. The file, named "Office Professional Plus 2010.exe" will be in your standard download location, usually your Downloads folder. Click it to run the installation on your computer.  You will have to provide the Activation Key you saved earlier during the installation. You may have to restart your computer after installation, depending on the MS package and your Operating System.

Downloading Windows Operating Systems from the UM Software Site:

Downloading Operating Systems (Windows XP, Windows 7) is much the same as downloading the Office package, above.
Follow the directions above thru the Cane ID login and you are back at the list of products you can download.

Click the operating system you wish to download, Windows 7 here.  All operating systems should work for new installs. Upgrading an existing operating system is beyond the scope of the document. Make sure you have anything you need to have after the upgrade backed up on another computer or external disk drive if you decide to attempt an upgrade.

Use the drop-down menu to select your System Type- 32 bit (most older computers) or 64 bit (many newer computers).

Save the Activation Key:. You will need it AFTER you install the operating system on your computer.  If you place the Activation Key in a file on your computer, then install the new OS, you may well lose the Key. You can always go back to this page and get a copy of the key if you need.

Download the ISO image for the OS.  Note that this one is 2.2Gigabytes. It takes a long time to download even with a fast connection.  Make sure your computer does suspend while it is downloading.

Once the *.iso file is on your computer, you will burn it to a DVD.  A CD is big enough for Windows XP. Then boot your computer off of the DVD and do the installation.  Look on Google if you don't know how to Burn a DVD/CD or do the install.
