RSMAS Computing Facility

Software

Software is generally the responsibility of the research programs and divisions that require them. The following points may of interest:

  • For Windows: The RSMAS Computer Facility [RCF] supplies Mcafee Antivirus software available at no charge for computers that are directly linked to the RSMAS net. Windows XP/Vista/Win7 workstations are supported. Run the appropriate executable from ftp://ftp.rsmas.miami.edu/pc/virus

  • For Windows: The University of Miami has entered into a licensing agreement with Microsoft Corporation

    • See http://www.miami.edu/software for the latest details and license terms. Operating systems and Office are available. The version of Microsoft Office for the Mac is also available (Office 2008). This software is available for Departmental computers (university purchase process) and for students.  For personal computers, Microsoft software is available at a significant discount.  If you have trouble downloading from the site see our UM Software link for agonizing detail...
    • Faculty and staff can purchase Microsoft software for their own computers purchased with their personal funds. The prices are quite good. See http://www.miami.edu/software
  • Volume licensing: UM has volume licensing agreements with a number of software vendors. This usually means you get a break on list price for multiple licenses.

  • Matlab: A number of Principle Investigators here share the annual cost of a Matlab site license for research programs at RSMAS. Computers belonging to those PIs are able to access a networked copy of Matlab. Cost per PI is $120 for 2006/07. This is not available for classroom use. Details

  • Linux: workstation licenses for RedHat Enterprise Linux are available from RCF.

  • VPN: If you have need for special access to the RSMAS network from your home or other remote computer, RCF provides Virtual Private Network (VPN) software that will let a remote computer appear to be on the local RSMAS net, thereby avoiding firewall restrictions.  Go to https://remote.rsmas.miami.edu, login with your RSMAS username/password, and click the [Start] button at the bottom of the Secure Access Server window.

RCF does not provide application-level support for any of these packages, though we will help you get them running on your computer where we can.
