Network Connections

Primary Network Connections at RSMAS

Node connections to the RSMAS network and Internet are available for $365/year/connection. Each full-time regular faculty member has one office connection paid by the Dean. Nodes are computers, printers, and other networked equipment that connects to the local network; they must be registered with the RCF. Contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for hookups and any changes to existing connections. Any actions affecting network hookup and configuration must be reported to the .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). We will need the following information to connect your computer to the net. It may take a day or more to complete connection once you apply to add a node to the net. We need to know:

  • Owner's Name, Division
  • User's Name, phone extension
  • Bldg/Room where the node will be located
  • Internet name you would like for the node: SOMENAME.rsmas.miami.edu
  • Wall port number. That is the ‘D’ number of the wall socket for the network connection.
  • Will the wall port be used by an additional computer(s); if so do you need a hub.

You can print our hardware.pdf form to fill in and submit if you wish.

RCF reserves the right to limit or discontinue network access to nodes that are running operating systems that are no longer supported by the vendor, or nodes that are not kept up to date with security patches for the relevant operating system and programs on the node.

Wireless Network Connections at RSMAS

Terms and conditions of use…

The RSMAS wireless network is “WirelessCanes”. Select it as your wireless network, then start up any web browser.  You will see a login page where you must enter your email username / password. Contact RCF if the defaults don’t work for you; we will reset it for you.  Your wireless account is implemented as part of the RSMAS email account is set up.   Changing your email password (in http://webmail.rsmas.miami.edu > Options) also changes your wireless password.

There is a "Guest" network  that allows visitors to use their web browser to access http:// and https:// websites on the internet without an account.  There is a relatively short connect period (2 hours?), after which you will have to reconnect to the guest network. Long-term guests that need access to the campus net for shared folders, printing, etc. should come by the RCF for a temporary account.

THIS IS AN OPEN NETWORK WITH NO SECURITY, so use appropriate precautions. Bring your laptop by the RCF (MSC22) if you need help with setup.

Private wireless networks are not allowed at RSMAS even if no nodes on the private wireless net are connected to the RSMAS cable network. Such installations compromise operation of the RSMAS wireless net.

Private IP Networks at RSMAS

UM computer network access policy forbids the connection of private computer networks to University of Miami networks. This means you may not connect computers on a private “lab” network to to the RSMAS campus network (or other UM nets).

You may not have computers with more than one network interface that allow traffic from the private net on to the the RSMAS net. This includes NAT servers and routers, which allow computers on the private net to access the the Internet or RSMAS network using the address of the NAT server. It also includes ordinary computers with two net interfaces, one configured for the private net and one for the RSMAS net, that are mis-configured so that traffic destined for the private net leaks to the RSMAS net.

RCF DOES NOT SUPPORT private networks. It is the owners responsibility to make sure there is no private network traffic on the RSMAS net.

If traffic from private nets is detected on the RSMAS net, the owner will be required to take down the private net and run all networked nodes thru the RSMAS net (with a node charge of $365/node.year). If a private net leaks into the RSMAS net and is using addresses outside of the private ranges (below), or using 10.X addresses that have been assigned to legitimate clusters, then such leakage can cause significant problems. Administrative charges may be levied for "cleanup" of private network installations, including retroactive node charges for all private computers that may have had access to campus network resources.

Authorized exceptions occur for a legitimate cluster configuration. Contact the RSMAS Computer Facility (RCF) to be assigned a sub-domain in the class A private net (10.x.y.z).

Closed private nets (not connected to the RSMAS net) should ALWAYS use addresses in the following ranges, and no others.

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255<

These addresses do not pass thru network gateways; the damage done by traffic bleeding into a public net is somewhat contained if this convention is followed. Note that RSMAS and UM use these address groups for internal communications. Private nets with these addresses must not be connected to the RSMAS/UM network.
