Maria Josefina Olascoaga

Maria Josefina Olascoaga is an Assistant Professor in the division of Applied Marine Physics at the University of Miami. Prior to joining the faculty of the Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science, she served as an Assistant Scientist and a Post Doctoral Researcher at the School.

Olascoaga received her Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography at the Center of Scientific Research and Higher Education of Ensenada (CICESE, Mexico) in 2001, where her advisor was the late Professor Pedro Ripa. She was honored by the Mexican Geophysical Union (UGM) with the 2001 Best Thesis Award in Earth Sciences.

Her research is funded by the National Science Foundation and National Aeronautic, Space Administration, and the Ocean and Human Health Center of the University of Miami. She is also a Principal Investigator in the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, Consortium for Advanced Research on the Transport of Hydrocarbons in the Environment (CARTHE).
