Atmospheric photochemistry and its impact on air quality, including atmospheric free radical chemistry, model prediction of atmospheric oxidation processes, heterogeneous chemical reactions, spectroscopic and chromatographic detection techniques, field measurement of atmospheric trace gases and radical species. Current research work is focused on nitrogen chemistry in urban, forested, and marine environments. Particularly, a sensitive system based on the long path photometric technique is being developed to detect trace-level nitrous acid (HONO) and nitric acid (HNO3) in the atmosphere. This system has been deployed in field studies to investigate the HONO and HNO3 chemistry and their roles in the atmospheric oxidation processes. Laboratory studies regarding heterogeneous chemistry of nitrogen species, including HONO, HNO3, and NOx, which will improve our understanding on the budget of HONO and HNO3, thus reduce the uncertainties in the model predictions in local, regional and global scales.
