My laboratory is pursuing research under the main theme of the physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms by which aqautic organisms adapt to environmental changes. The main system we are pursuing deals with the effect of the environment on nitrogen metabolism and excretion in the gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta. There is a strong underlying theme of phylogeny and genetics to try to ascertain the evolutionary pace at which the adaptations to environment take place. In all areas, functional genomics (DNA microarrays) are playing a greater role in recent years. Although now based primarily at the University of Ottawa in Canada, my laboratory has frequent extended research trips for collaborations with researchers at RSMAS.
