I work on the development and transfer of knowledge of nearshore and surfzone hydrodynamics and morphological response with a strong emphasis on coastal safety in all its aspects. This includes (but is not restricted to) the safety of the hinterland during extreme storm and hurricane conditions for sandy coasts, swimmer safety, which is mostly affected by a combination of breaking waves and strong rip currents, and safety from environmental hazards such as pollutants and harmful algae contaminating the beach for many kilometers alongshore. Both research and teaching build on the combination of state of the art numerical modeling, laboratory experiments and comprehensive field studies with many national and international partners.
