On Campus

Mangrove Restoration

The Rosenstiel School’s Green Committee has begun a coastal restoration project on campus, following in the footsteps of our neighbors at the Virginia Key Beach Park. Mangroves, sea grape trees, and other dune plants are important in holding the sand in place and protecting campus from storms. The Green Committee has removed the exotic plants, such as the Australian Pine and Brazilian Pepper, and continues to monitor the dunes to ensure they do not grow back and native plants are able to fill in the open spaces. They have also planted native vines around the diesel tank, which will produce flowers and fruit, and attract native butterflies.
