WHAT: 20 high school teams from 14 schools consisting of four or five students compete in the Manatee Bowl, an annual, regional ocean science competition.  The teams are tested through quick answer buzzer questions and thought-provoking team challenge questions. This year there will be six schools competing in the Manatee Bowl for the first time: Christopher Columbus High School, Cypress Bay High School, St. Brendan High School, Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High, Deerfield Beach High School and Gulliver Prep.  The regional competition alternates annually between the University of Miami (UM) Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science and Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Fort Pierce. Manatee Bowl judges are mostly volunteer scientists from UM, Harbor Branch, the National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and various other local organizations.  Eight of this year’s judges are NOSB alumni, who competed when they were in high school and are carrying on the tradition of scientific excellence through their involvement as judges.

The winning team of this bowl will compete against 24 other regional champions in the 16th Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on April 18-21, 2013 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

WHEN: February 23, 2013 and Time

WHY: The Manatee Bowl is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), which is a program of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership based in Washington, D.C.  Through this educational forum, the NOSB strives to encourage and support the next generation of marine scientists, policy makers, teachers, explorers, researchers, technicians, environmental advocates and informed citizens, to be stewards of the ocean.  Many past NOSB participants have moved on to pursue college degrees and careers in ocean science.  In 2013, approximately 2,000 students from over 300 high schools will participate.  For more information, visit www.nosb.org.
