Reitmeister-Abess Center Environmental Stewardship Award Presented to Hiaasen

MIAMI — April 14, 2011 — The Reitmeister-Abess Center Environmental Stewardship Award was awarded to Carl Hiaasen, a New York Times bestselling author and Miami Herald columnist. Hiaasen is the second recipient of the award which is sponsored by the Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy and UM Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science to promote efforts to preserve endangered species and rid pollution from rivers, streams and oceans.
Hiaasen, who was joined (L-R) by UM Rosenstiel School Dean Roni Avissar, Philanthropists Leonard and Jayne Abess, UM President Donna Shalala and Dean James Tien and Dr. James Englehardt from UM's College of Engineering, participated in the groundbreaking of the University of Miami’s innovative autonomous net-zero dorm project. The new dorm project, led by Englehardt, is a pilot project that uses breakthrough technologies to conserve both water and energy by purifying and recirculating wastewater for re-use and employing energy efficient materials.
