“Ocean Kids” is a hands-on education event that utilizes the marine environment and conservation issues to instill a passion for learning and curiosity beyond the classroom.  More than 200 children ages 7-9 rotate through 15 stations that include hands-on demonstrations and activities, such as marine mammal rescue, finding a solution to pollution, fishing for overfishing facts, a touch tank exploration, participating in relays wearing scuba gear, looking through microscopes, and learning about recycling and water conservation throughout the fun-filled day.
200 third-grade students from four elementary schools will be in attendance: Earlington Heights Elementary, Liberty City Elementary, Miami Gardens Elementary, and Phillis Wheatley Elementary.  The opening ceremony includes Dr. Roni Avissar, Dean of The UM Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Danni Washington, the Founder of The Big Blue & You Foundation and Lisa Morales from Telemundo.
Saturday, Nov. 13. The opening ceremony begins at 9:30 am, immediately followed by rotations through experiential learning stations. The event concludes at 2 pm.
Edward T. Foote II University Green, University of Miami, Coral Gables Campus.
The mission for the event is two-fold.  The first is to reach out to the at-risk children of Miami and utilize the marine science and conservation arena to inspire curiosity, excitement about learning, and confidence.  Secondly, the goal is to generate environmental awareness and stewardship in underserved communities.
The event is presented by Future Interests in Nature and Sea (F.I.N.SEA) Foundation, in conjunction with University of Miami (UM) student organizations Rho Rho Rho and the Marine Mammal Stranding Team.
