Tom McHugh is back at the UM Med campus for two MATLAB instruction sessions (below) on Wednesday, Nov 28th.  There will not be seminars at RSMAS this time.  I am sure NOAA folk are welcome as well.  Any future communications for this will be on seminar@rsmas.miami.edu.  Correspond with Tom McHugh <Tom.McHugh@mathworks.com> for details.

Grant,

Good morning.  I hope all is well.  I am writing to inform you that the MathWorks will be visiting campus on Wednesday, November 28th for a complimentary MATLAB seminar. The full agenda is included below.  Although I understand this is not the most convenient location for your users, I was wondering if you could distribute the invitation to the MATLAB users.

Thank you,

Tom

Introduction to MATLAB and Parallel Computing for Life Sciences

Part 1: Introduction to MATLAB for Life Scientists (2:00 – 3:30 p.m.)

This seminar will start with an overview of MATLAB and demonstrate features that are most relevant for life science research.  We will show you how to import, analyze and visualize data without being an expert programmer.  This seminar will demo a curve-fitting example with MATLAB in a manner suitable for those with little to no programming experience.  You will see how to automate your entire curve-fitting workflow.  Highlights include:

·         Importing data

·         Visualizing the data

·         Fitting a built-in or customized equation to your data

·         Creating an HTML report of all of your steps

·         Creating an application with a graphical user interface (GUI)

Part 2: Parallel and GPU Computing with MATLAB (3:30 – 4:30 p.m.)

In this segment you will learn how to solve computationally and data-intensive problems using multicore processors, GPUs, and computer clusters.  We will introduce you to high-level programming constructs that allow you to parallelize MATLAB applications and run them on multiple processors.  We will show you how to overcome the memory limits of your desktop computer by distributing your data on a large scale computing resource, such as a cluster.  We will also demonstrate how to take advantage of GPUs to speed up computations without low-level programming.

Highlights include:

Toolboxes with built-in support for parallel computing

Creating parallel applications to speed up independent tasks

Scaling up to computer clusters, grid environments or clouds

Employing GPUs to speed up your computations
