Topic: Assessment of Neural Network Retrieval of Outer Core Surface Wind Structure and Intensity from QuikSCAT's Tropical Cyclone Overpasses
Date: Friday, November 2, 2012
Time: 2:30 pm, Eastern Daylight Time (New York, GMT-04:00)

Abstract:
Best estimates of tropical cyclone structure and intensity from
operational forecast centers are employed to assess a re-retrieval of
the 1999-2009 QuikSCAT surface winds using a neural network method
developed by NASA/JPL. Validation focuses mainly on Atlantic Basin
events, for which additional comparisons are made with conventional
retrievals, H*Wind analyses (both those that were employed to train
the neural network and independent analyses), and airborne research
observations (stepped frequency microwave radiometer and global
positioning system dropwindsondes).
Neural network retrieval is found to compensate for the impact of rain
by extending the range of QuikSCAT's useful wind speed well into the
first Saffir-Simpson category and also by reducing contamination in
weak winds. It is proposed that improved estimates of maximum
intensity and of outer core surface wind asymmetry (with somewhat
greater asymmetry than that of operational best estimates and H*Wind
analyses) can be obtained. The intensity of tropical cyclones in the east
Pacific and other ocean basins and a documented dependence of peak
wind azimuth (or asymmetry) on the direction of cyclone motion and
deep-layer shear are also briefly discussed.-------------------------------------------------------
