MAF Seminar
Friday, September 21
10:30 am - 11:30 am
MSC343
Guest Speaker: Dr. Lilli Acevedo
Title and abstract:
Cultural Heritage Management Without Roots: Discovering and Managing Maritime Cultural Heritage in Anguilla.

Passed over by Alan Albright and George Bass in a previous life, the Island of Anguilla has a mixed maritime heritage. From English colonization, brief slavery and subsistence centred around the sea, maritime heritage has been played an integral yet largely unrecognized part in creating the Island, today. This seminar looks at the maritime history of Anguilla and the 2009 Shipwreck Survey as a case study for MCHM in the Caribbean region. In addition to defining a list of recognized challenges, a number of solutions are proposed including community and public archaeology. The seminar is designed to get students thinking about the challenges facing heritage management in their local area and whether the solutions proposed for Anguilla are unique or more generally applicable to a South Florida-context.

About the Guest Speaker:

A Scuba Instructor trained in Key Largo and a doctoral scholar at the University of Southampton in England, Lilli has done experimental archaeology in Denmark, terrestrial archaeology in France, and conservation work with the Mary Rose Trust in England. Lilli spent 3 years doing fieldwork on Anguilla in the Caribbean.
