For interested coral reef scientists:

The Science Panel for NOAA’s biological status review of 82 species of corals considered for listing under the Endangered Species Act is tomorrow at Nova Southeastern University (NCRI), in Dania Beach (Ft. Lauderdale).

A list of speakers and title are below, as well as further details and a draft schedule for the day.

Atlantic/Caribbean Coral Listing Science Workshop

Local Lead: Dr. Margaret Miller, SEFSC Benthic Ecology Unit

Chair: Dr. Robert Detrick, Assistant Administrator, Ocean and Atmospheric Research

Panelists:

·         Rich Aronson Biological and physical controls on coral reefs

·         Mark Hay The role of seaweed competition and phenotype-environment mismatch in the coral reef death spiral

·         Rob Van Woesik The extinction risk of corals: the past, the present and the future

·         Ariel Kushmaro Coral nutrition, defense and adaptation to changing environment: the role of its associated microbial community

·         Andrew Baker Contribution of algal symbionts (Symbiodinium spp.) to the adaptive capacity of reef corals

·         Monica Medina Coral Reef Responses to Global Climate Change: A genomic perspective

·         John Bruno Effects of ocean warming on coral populations and communities

Objectives:

·         Provide information to the scientific community and general public on the Status Review process and the outcomes of the status review

·         Conduct facilitated expert panel discussion on three key topics relevant to the Status Review and provide opportunities for audience questions and input

·         Provide an opportunity for coral and climate experts to provide formal input (e.g., papers, etc.)

·         NOAA intends to hold this as an open public meeting and does not intend to establish an advisory committee as defined by the Federal Advisory Committee Act.

Date:

·         June 27th at Nova Southeastern University, Dania Beach. FL

Venue:

·         National Coral Reef Institute (NCRI) Auditorium, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Thematic foci:

·         Climate change in the Gulf/Caribbean/Atlantic and climate impacts on coral reef ecosystems

·         Coral Reef Ecology and Adaptation
