Plankton gone wild: In-situ acoustic measurements of zooplankton behavior and zooplanktivory

In this talk Dr. Jaffe will describe several types of in-situ observations of zooplankton using various types of high frequency
acoustics.  For the most part, in-situ, behavioral observations of zooplankton are sparse in spite of the fact that they play an
important role in the ecosystem.  As will be described, the development of multibeam sonars led to the observation of 
behavior of euphausiids (Saanich Inlet, Canada) and copepods  (Gulf of Aquaba, Israel).  Additional work, currently underway in Israel,
with dual sonars placed up stream and down stream of a school of planktivorous fish, is yielding information that characterizes
the "functional response" of the animals to a variety of environmental parameters such as light and water velocity.
