Abstract
The Brazil Current System is a vertically stacked assembly of western boundary currents along the western periphery of the South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre . The surface current, the Brazil Current (BC), borders the continental shelf break off East, Southeast and Southern Brazil. The BC, therefore, flows over the slope of several major sedimentary basins â the EspÃÄrito Santo, Campos and Santos Basins â where the majority of Brazilian oil reservoirs are concentrated. Understanting its dynamics and variability is fundamental for sustainable oil exploration as well as to have a better picture of the South Atlantic general circulation and its impact on the earth climate system. In this talk I will present the results from observations as well as analytical and numerical process modeling studies that my group has been conducting in the Brazil Current region. The new questions that emerged from our works will also be presented.
