"Unconscious Bias in the 21st Century and It's Impact on Diversity and Inclusiveness" 

by Dr. Valerie Purdie-Vaughns, Department of Psychology, Columbia University

Dr. Purdie-Vaughns is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert on racial and gender achievement gaps in academic and corporate institutions and how stigma undermines intellectual performance. She conducts research on other forms of stigma including: stigma and LGBTQ groups, stigma of mental illness, and stigma based on multiple identities (intersectionality). Dr. Purdie-Vaughns has authored numerous publications that have appeared in journals such as Science, Psychological Science, and Journal of Personality & Social Psychology. She has been awarded numerous grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Russell Sage Foundation, and William T. Grant Foundation. Her most recent grant from NSF examines how stigma may affect activation of the neuroendocrine and sympathetic nervous systems, systems implicated in immune responses that affect long-term health and cognitive performance.

Stereotype Threat is a field of Social Psychology research that: 1) using empirical techniques, quantitatively documents the effects of various stereotypes on everything from standardized tests to athletic performance OF BOTH MALE AND FEMALE INDIVIDUALS OF VIRTUALLY ALL RACES AND BACKGROUNDS, and 2) identifies simple, inexpensive interventions to reduce "underperformance" of stereotyped groups and individuals, especially in the classroom.
