“The REAL science of Finding Nemo”

Empirical measurements of larval dispersal at an ecologically and demographically relevant scale are far and few between due to the many challenges associated with tracking individual larvae during their pelagic phase. However, such information is critical for effective design of marine reserves and reserve networks. We used genetic parentage analysis to demonstrate that patterns of local replenishment of two reef fishes (Amphiprion percula and Chaetodon vagabundus) in an MPA network in Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea, were remarkably consistent over several years, suggesting that even small MPAs may be self-sustaining. However, dispersal from this reserve to other nodes in the MPA network was variable between species and through time, suggesting that optimization of reserve networks for connectivity will remain a challenging task. We subsequently applied this technique to large commercially important species (Plectropomus maculatus and Lutjanus carponotatus) in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. We are able to demonstrate that populations inside of reserves supply significant larval input to fished areas adjacent to reserves.

Dr. Berumen will also discuss educational and research opportunities at KAUST for interested students. Contact Dr. Su Sponaugle (ssponaugle@rsmas.miami.edu) if you wish to meet with him on Monday or Tuesday.
