MAF Student Seminar Speaker: Kasey Cantwell October 28, 2011 10:30 am - 11:30 am SLAB 103 Topic: Using underwater landscape mosaics in analyzing benthic communities Abstract: Between September 2008 and May 2010,
underwater landscape mosaics were used to document and track the
fate of an inshore patch reef before and after a catastrophic
cold-water anomaly in January 2010. Comprehensive analysis of
the benthic community showed mortality in 28%, 51%, and 36% of
stony corals, gorgonians, and sponges, respectively, following
the cold-water anomaly. Archived mosaics showed that bleaching
the summer prior to the cold stress predisposed both corals and
octocorals to mortality following the January event. Previous
studies captured the fate of only scleractinian corals following
this devastating event, thereby underestimating the magnitude of
total reef-decline. This study suggests that all members of
sessile benthic communities are susceptible to environmental
disturbance. Providing an unparalleled visual record of reefal
change, underwater mosaics support scientific understanding and
public awareness of modern reef threats at a previously
unattainable scale. Kasey Cantwell SCEP Environmental
