Title: Cape Eleuthera Institute/Island School - opportunities for sustainability research and education

Monday, October 24, 2011
10:30 am to 11:30 am
SLAB 103

Guest Speaker: Chris Maxey
                        Director, Cape Eleuthera Foundation
                        Co-Founder, The Island School

In 1998, Chris Maxey, graduate of Marine Affairs and Policy at RSMAS, and Pam Maxey formed the Cape Eleuthera Marine Conservation Project (now Cape Eleuthera Foundation) to build a school and research station at Cape Eleuthera, Bahamas. Now, more than 10 years later, the project has expanded to include a community middle school and resource center, the Deep Creek Middle School (DCMS), for local students and the Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) that focuses more energy on sustainable development initiatives. It has also launched a new company called Cape Systems Limited to expand the influence of The Island School sustainability model by adding professional capacity, strategic partnerships and working closely with the business and development communities.

Chris will talk about the environmental and social projects through The Island School that are aligned with the Foundation's ongoing missions of education, research and outreach. He will also discuss opportunities for sustainability research and education that are available in the School.
