Title:           “African Easterly Waves: Dynamics and Diagnostics

Abstract:  African Easterly Waves (AEWs) are a core component of the summertime climate over much of North Africa and the tropical Atlantic.
Textbooks descriptions often attribute AEW to an inherent instability of the summer time basic state, analogous to processes in the mid latitudes.
In the first part of this presentation, a synthesis of recent work that argues that the dynamics of AEWs are heavily influenced by diabatic processes
will be presented. With this recent work in mind, the remainder of the presentation will focus on the development of objective method of precisely
locating and tracking AEWs from various datasets.
