GALAPAGOS ISLANDS:

A LIVING LABORATORY

Johann Besserer

Marine Affairs & Policy, ‘07

C0-founder and President, Isabela Oceanographic Institute

Crystal clear waters, active volcano hiking trails and some of the most enchanting wildlife the Pacific has to offer can be found on the Galapagos Islands. This paradise inspired Charles Darwin to develop his theory of Evolution in the 1830's. Inspired by his own study abroad experience with the Rosenstiel School, alumnus Johann Besserer created the Isabela Oceanographic Institute (IOI) to provide an exciting new way to study the Galapagos and support sustainable development in this island paradise.  IOI’s motto, Conservation through Education, combines study abroad and development aid in Galapagos into a synergetic process that not only offers a unique experience to University of Miami students but also positively impacts its environment as well.  Come learn about this beautiful archipelago and what Besserer and UM students and faculty are doing to protect it.
