Please join us for a special presentation, reception, and book-signing celebrating the release of:
Sex, Drugs, and Sea Slime:
The Oceans’ Oddest Creatures and Why They Matter
by
Dr. Ellen Prager
Dr. Prager presents stories and images from her just-released book highlighting the strange cast of characters that inhabit the oceans' depths and how they are connected to society in everything from our food supply to the economy, jobs, and in biomedical research and biotechnology.
From the tiny voracious arrow worms whose predatory ways may lead to death by overeating to the hagfish that ties itself into a knot to keep from suffocating in its own slime or the sea slug whose sexual encounters can truly turn into a dangerous liaison due to untimely cannibalism, Prager provides an entertaining ocean tell-all and a realistic look at why we all should care about the loss of species in the sea.

With opening remarks by U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and U.S. Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart.
When: Friday, May 6th
Time: Lecture begins at 6:00 p.m. with book signing and reception to follow
Where: University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School Auditorium, 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway (next to the Miami Seaquarium)

“The ocean is endlessly fascinating and mysterious. With her easy and engaging writing, Ellen Prager conveys a deeply delightful introduction to all kinds of ocean creatures and their links to society. A great book or beginners and one even experts can learn from and enjoy, this is possibly the best general book ever written on creatures of the deep.” -Carl Safina, author of The View From Lazy Point
“If you read only one book about the ocean, read this one. Learn and laugh about the astonishing creatures of the sea and discover the connections that all living things share, and realize that trouble for ocean life is trouble for human life. A thoroughly entertaining, sobering, and inspiring must-read for all who care about the future of the sea, and the future of humankind.” -Sylvia Earle, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence
