MAF SEMINAR
Friday, April 15
2 - 3 pm
MAF Seminar Room
S Grosvenor 114/116

Guest Speaker: Howard Goldstein
Office of Protected Resources, NMFS

Please join Howie Goldstein for a presentation on his fieldwork experiences during National Science Foundation-funded worldwide marine geophysical research cruises, National Marine Fisheries Service ecosystem surveys, and the 2008 "Behavioral Response Study (BRS) of Deep Diving Odontocetes" research cruise that took place in the Tongue of the Ocean, Bahamas .  Howie has spent over 5 years at sea participating as a marine mammal observer on over 25 scientific projects and will primarily discuss the BRS research cruise, which consisted of a 7-week controlled exposure experiment onboard the R/V Roger Revelle.  The purpose of the ongoing BRS research study, which began in 2007, is to investigate the responses of whales to Navy-simulated mid-frequency sonar and other sounds via suction cup tagging and acoustic playbacks.  Howie will present a “day in the life” look at living at sea and how research was carried out from this project and other cruises."

Hi Maria,

Sounds good, is this the same room that Candace and I were in in November?  Below is a draft abstract:

Let me know if this is ok, I can provide more information or another topic if necessary.

Thanks and see you on Friday!

Cheers,
Howie

Hi Howie,

I was able to reserve the MAF conference room at 2 pm this Friday. Is this fine with you? Our regular spot of 10:30 to 11:30 is already taken for a thesis defense. Email me and send an abstract of your topic.

Best,

Maria

Hi Maria,

Is their a specific topic that you would like the MAF lecture/presentation to be on for next Friday?  I can put together something similar to Candace's on the Marine Mammal Protection Act Incidental Take Program or I can focus on something related to my 5 years of at-sea field experience (worldwide seismic surveys, ecosystem assessments for NMFS science centers, and the 2008 Behavioral Response Study in the Bahamas) or a combination of both.

Let me know your thoughts so that I can start working on the powerpoint presentation.

Thanks,
howie

HI Howie,

It is so nice to hear from you. I will the head Instructor for the course if that time (April 15) is available. You can also give an MAF lecture=presentation on Friday if that is fine with you.

Thank you so much for offering your support to our program.

Best,

Maria

Hi Maria,

How are you?

I will be in Miami on Thursday, April 14th to Friday, April 15th, and am interested in participating and contributing to a discussion for the marine mammal management course at RSMAS.  Please let me know if you would still like me to attend and if  I need to prepare any materials to be presented on a specific topic.

Thanks and look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,
Howie

Hi Candace,

Happy New Year!!!

MAF is again offering the Marine Mammal Management cours (Conservation
and Management of Large Marine Vertebrates - Lem's class). I will be
co-teaching it with a marine biologist and a marine mammal person from
the state.

I was wondering if you and Howie will be visiting Miami this Spring.
Maybe I can ask you to participate in our Friday discussion on class
topics. If you or Howie will be interested in participating and
contributing, can you email me when you will be here?

As usual, thanks for your support.

Hugs,

Maria
