Title:           An Overview of   Hurricane Observations

Abstract :        Hurricanes are no longer located in data-void regions. Advances in observing instruments have provided abundant direct and/or
indirect measurements within and around hurricanes. These presently available observations are far from being
used effectively for improved modeling of hurricanes. In this talk, applications of several types of o
bservations, other than those already included in Thursday’s talk, to hurricane data assimilation will be
eviewed, with emphasis on data characteristics, promises, and major challenges.
