TITLE:              “Applications of Satellite Total Column
Ozone and Airborne Radar Measurements for

Improved Hurricane Initialization”

Abstract : Cyclonically rotating spiral rainbands around the storm center often seen in real storms in satellite and radar images can be modeled 40 years ago.
However, the number, the magnitude, the shape, the radial extent, the azimuthal phase and the temporal evolution of the rainbands are case-dependent and
modeling of these features has yet to be substantially improved. The intensity change of tropical cyclone is sensitive to all these features. An observationally based
hurricane initialization is thus needed for improving hurricane intensity forecast. In this talk, two examples will be provided to illustrate different alternatives
for developing a comprehensive, observationally based hurricane initialization scheme. Particularly, several
considerations and new approaches for applying
satellite total ozone and airborne radar data for improved hurricane initialization will be presented. Numerical results will be shown to substantiate the
proposed new ideas and new approaches.
