Werner Alpers is one of the pioneers of ocean remote sensing by active microwave instruments. Working in this field since 1973, he has made significant contributions to the theories of SAR imaging of ocean waves, shallow-water bathymetry, oceanic internal waves, surface films, ship wakes, and various atmospheric features over the ocean. He has been a PI of many German and international research projects, and he has authored and co-authored more than 110 peer-reviewed papers. Despite his retirement as Full Professor and Acting Director of the University of Hamburg's Institute of Oceanography in 2001, he is still involved in many research activities, publishing several papers a year, and traveling all over the world. He will spend the whole next week at RSMAS and the following week at Nova Southeastern University.
