Title:
Simulation of CCN and IN effects on cloud microphysics and precipitation formation

Speaker: Jen-Ping Chen, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, National Taiwan University

Abstract: A mesoscale meteorological model with the capability of simulating aerosol effects on precipitation was applied to simulate precipitation change under different aerosol loading. Sensitivity of precipitation microphysics to aerosol concentration was tested for three types of aerosol particles. Increasing cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) progressively suppresses warm-rain formation, but the effect on cold-rain formation could be either positive or negative depending on whether snow or graupel processes dominate the overall precipitation. Giant CCN (GCCN) generally enhance warm rain formation but only up to a certain concentration above which a reversal of the effect occurs. The behavior of ice nuclei (IN) is similar. The four types of IN (mineral dust, bacteria, soot and silver iodine) that tested all enhance precipitation at low concentration but reduce precipitation when the IN concentration becomes too high. Analysis of the microphysical responses from the above tests will be discussed.
