MAF SEMINAR

Friday, October 29, 2010
10:30 am - 11:30 am
Dean's Seminar Room

Guest Speaker:

Dr. Alan Leonardi
Deputy Director
AOML, NOAA

Topic: Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning

Abstract:

Americaâs oceans, coasts, and Great Lakes are vital to our economy, security, and culture and support a growing number of significant and often-competing uses and activities. These uses are expanding at a rate that challenges our ability to plan for and manage them under the current sector-by-sector approachâan approach that pays little regard to scale, scope, or time. What has been absent and greatly needed is a more integrated ecosystem-based approach to planningâone that is flexible, comprehensive, proactive, and regionalâthat brings together all the relevant agencies and stakeholders at the onset to ensure a more sustainable future. The recently signed Presidential executive order establishing a National Policy for the Stewardship of the Ocean, Our Coasts, and the Great Lakes aims to solve this long standing challenge through the development of a framework for effective Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning (CMSP). Dr. Alan Leonardi, Deputy Director of NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, will discuss NOAA's role in Coastal and Marine Spacial Planning and how CMSP relates to NOAAâs priorities as an operational marine science and management agency.
