Hurricanes and Key Biscayne: Past, Present, and Future

The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active in recorded history.  Four major hurricanes struck the continental U.S. causing over $100 billion in damage. Forecasters are also predicting an extremely active season this year. Are such hyper-active seasons an anomaly or a glimpse into the future? As our climate changes, extreme weather events like hurricanes, heat-waves, droughts and floods have become more common. Are these changes linked to global warming? If so, what will the future be like here on Key Biscayne? Dr. Soden will examine scientific evidence behind global warming, explore its potential links to extreme weather events, and discuss the changes that South Florida will face in the coming decades.

Lecture begins at 7:00 p.m.; followed by light refreshments.
