"Toward understanding the importance of oceanic eddies in tracer distribution"

Room: Slab Seminar Room S/A 103

Date: September 15th , 3:00 p.m.

Abstract

Eddies in the ocean play an important role in distribution of such important tracers, as temperature, salinity and carbon. These effects are studied here, using high-resolution numerical simulations of the North Atlantic. The importance of eddies and their non-uniform transport properties for the ventilation of the deep ocean is demonstrated by the analysis of the simulated distributions of the chlorofluorocarbon (CFC). Analysis of the  Lagrangian particle trajectories further reveals several important anisotropic properties of the material transport by eddies and eddy-driven zonal jets. In particular, the zonal material transport systematically exceeds the meridional transport, and varies significantly in the vertical direction.
