Hi All,

we have our weekly AMP student seminars this thursday at 10. am in the AMP
conference room (next to cafeteria behind the aquarium), with two
speakers:

Silvia Gremes Cordero presenting her work on AIR-SEA TURBULENT FLUXES
CALCULATIONS IN HIGH WIND CONDITIONS: METHODS AND
LIMITATIONS

and Laura Fiorentino on "pollutant dispersal in the coastal ocean: a
dynamical systems perspective".

kind regards,

AIR-SEA TURBULENT FLUXES CALCULATIONS IN HIGH WIND CONDITIONS: METHODS AND
LIMITATIONS

Turbulent air-sea fluxes of Momentum and Humidity during the North
Atlantic Plankton bloom of summer 2006 is presented. The data set is
unique in what contains measurements obtained during large wind speeds,
that is, over 20 m/sec. The data analyzed was obtained with an Eddy Flux
Tower mounted on board the R/V Celtic Explorer, consisting in a sonic
anemometer and a LICOR analyzer. Such instrumentation allows us to obtain
measurements of wind speed, air temperature, humidity content, and gas
concentration fluctuations.
The momentum fluxes were calculated with the direct Eddy Covariance, the
Bulk and the Inertial Dissipation method. The methods show similar
tendencies in the time series and comparable order of magnitudes,
reaffirming the usefulness of the methods and the instrumentation
accuracy. However, the influence of flow distortion can be deducted from
the results. Humidity fluxes were also calculated with the same methods,
giving useful input to the bulk coefficients used in the fluxes'
parameterization.
The importance of air-sea fluxes and its proper parameterization is given
by its fundamental role in coupling atmospheric and oceanic models of
climate change prediction.
