UMâs Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science Welcomes:
Dr. Mark Thiemens
UM Alumnus, Goldschmidt Medalist, Member of the National Academy, Dean
of the Division of Physical Sciences at University of California â San Diego, and All-Around Good Guy

"Mass Independent Isotope Effects and Application to
Climate Change and the Origin and Evolution
of Oxygen of Earth & Mars"
Thusday, April 8, 2010
3:00 PM
Rosenstiel School Auditorium

Dr. Thiemens' work on atmospheric ozone, and his subsequent studies of isotope fractionations
in other elements pertaining to atmospheric chemistry and rock-gas interactions, have shown
that mass independent fractionations can, and do, take place in nature. This realization has
opened whole new avenues of geochemical research. He has even had minor planet orbiting
the inner part of the main asteroid belt designated (7004) Markthiemens in honor of his
groundbreaking work with meteorites.
