: “Mobile,
rapid-scan, phased array Doppler
radar observations in ABSTRACT:
There are currently two mobile (truck-mounted), X-band, rapid-scan
Doppler
radars in use in the U. S.: The CSWR Rapid DOW and the CIRPAS/Naval
Postgraduate School MWR-05XP. This talk will focus on the latter, a
hybrid
phased-array and rapidly mechanically scanning radar, which was used in
the
southern Plains during the springs of 2007, 2008, and 2009 during year
1 of
VORTEX-2. A case will be made for the collection of rapid-scan,
volumetric
measurements in severe convective storms to study the mechanisms
responsible
for tornadogenesis. Data to be discussed include the complete life
histories of
cyclonic tornadoes in two supercells and two intense, anticyclonic
vortices
adjacent to nearby cyclonic vortices/tornadoes. Plans for using the
radar
during year 2 of VORTEX-2 and a progress report on the construction of
the
first mobile, rapid-scan, polarimetric,
X-band, Doppler radar (RaXPol) will be given also. Finally, I hope that
there
will be some discussion from the audience on how the MWR-05XP and/or
the RaXPol
may be used in hurricane landfall field experiments.
