Inverse Modeling and Data Assimilation in
Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences

Inverse modeling and data assimilation (IMDA) methods are used for improving quantitative  assessment of complex processes by (1) integrating  physical models with observations, (2) advancing  model-based hypothesis testing by inversion of  modeled parameters from measurements, and (3)  assessing uncertainties in system analysis and  prediction. IMDA technology is already considered  critical in many areas of atmospheric and oceanic  sciences, such as in numerical weather and ocean prediction and climate reanalysis, and could play a significant role in other aspects of earth system research. An overview of the fundamentals of  IMDA  methodology and formulation of standard techniques will be presented together with results from studies on inverse modeling and data assimilation of cloud microphysical processes.
