GROWTH OF BONEFISH IN SOUTHERN FLORIDA WATERS

Michael F. Larkin

Bonefish support economically important recreational fisheries in southern Florida, and are a vital component of the ecosystem.  To address the issue of sustainability of the resource, a spatial age structured simulation model is being developed.  A key model component is lifetime growth.  A previous age-and-growth study in the Florida Keys failed to allocate proportionate sampling for each age class in the bonefish stock creating two analytical problems: over-sampling of the most common age classes (i.e., ages 3 to 9); and, under-sampling of the youngest (<2 years old) and oldest (>12 years old) age classes.  These low sample sizes of old and young fish meant that the growth curve and maximum age were not well estimated.  To ameliorate these issues, under-represented size/age classes were targeted in our sampling.  Growth was also estimated with changes in length of recaptures from an extensive 12-year anchor tagging study by separating data into different days at large and seasonal components.  Estimates of growth parameters from both datasets are compared.
