CRITERIA

The criteria for the award and its presentation are as follows:

The award is given annually and will consist of $10,000 and a gold medallion imprinted with the Rosenstiel School logo and on the reverse the recipient’s name and date of award.

The award is presented at a banquet at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The recipient is invited to spend a week at the Rosenstiel School for lectures and discussions with faculty members and students. The visit will be arranged at a time convenient to the recipient, whose expenses will be paid by the Rosenstiel School. The recipient is asked to prepare several talks: one aimed at a general audience about some aspect of their scientific work, and another (or more) research talk(s) aimed at a more scientific audience consisting of faculty members and students of the school and local scientists.

Water

The Rosenstiel Award recognizes outstanding contributions to marine science, including oceanographically relevant aspects of atmospheric science and fundamental developments in ocean engineering. To accommodate the various disciplines on which ocean science is based, the award is presented on a rotating basis for achievements in six broad disciplinary areas:

  • Meteorology and physical oceanography;
  • Marine geology and geophysics;
  • Marine and atmospheric chemistry;
  • Marine biology and fisheries;
  • Applied marine physics;
  • Marine affairs and policy.

The purpose of the Rosenstiel Award is to honor a scientist who in the last decade has made a significant and growing impact in the field. The award shall go to scientists who have not previously been recognized for their contributions.
