Professor Smith brings great visibility to the division through her numerous scholarship achievements, service to the profession and awards and recognition by a her peers. Indeed, in addition to her Ph.D. from Duke University, she has two honorary doctorates (Colorado College and Long Island University); she is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union; she is Godmother of the Celebrity ship Solstice; she received the Benezet Award from Colorado College (a life-time achievement award) and the Rachel Carson Award from the American Geophysical Union. She has also received the Provost’s Award for Scholarly Productivity at UM and she is a Fulbright Scholar. Having served as MBF Chair a few years ago, she brings great experience to lead again this division. Professor Smith is also the Co-director of UM’s Oceans and Human Health Center and is Assistant Dean of the UM Undergraduate program in Marine and Atmospheric Science. She served as a Program Manager at the National Science Foundation and was Chair of the Oceanographic and Atmospheric Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
