In addition to the research interests of individual investigators associated with the center, the primary areas of research of HYDROSPHERE are focused on interdisciplinary approaches to solve existing problems in water as a global resource. Examples of these areas are:

(a) Groundwater as a water supply source (finding and tracking groundwater: quantity and quality)

(b) Ecological balances affected by groundwater flow and transport

(c) Land surface-atmosphere water fluxes and the hydrologic cycle

(d) Surface water (rainfall, runoff, marine) - groundwater interactions (quantity and quality)

(e) Hydrologic infrastructure and natural disaster prevention and mitigation

(f) Groundwater pollution regulatory framework, deep-injection of waste, decision-making and policy

(g) Ramifications of groundwater seepage into the marine environment

HYDROSPHERE has state of the art analytical and microbiological laboratories, as well as several field research equipment stations. HYDROSPHERE is currently funding more than 20 graduate students and has more than 20 faculty participating in joint research programs.
