GOAL:
To provide both independent and expert reviews of the
science necessary for the management of marine fisheries resources that are
under the purview of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Fisheries.
OBJECTIVES:
-
Management of natural resources depends on good science, and the Sustainable
Fisheries Act of 1996 specifies that fishery conservation and management
measures "shall be based upon the best scientific information available"
(National Standard 2, 16 USC 1851 (a) (2))
-
NOAA Fisheries is the organization that provides the science necessary for the
management of fisheries and other related resources
-
In
order to enhance the capacity of NOAA Fisheries to provide the best science
via peer reviews, the Center for Independent Experts, an independent agency at
the University of Miami, provides independent peer reviews of NOAA Fisheries
science
